Journey into Kashi, the City of Light, where Lord Shiva is believed to grant liberation and where one of Hinduism's most sacred Jyotirlingas has inspired pilgrims for millennia.
Standing on the western banks of the sacred Ganga in Varanasi, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple is among the most revered shrines in Hinduism and one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Known as the spiritual heart of Kashi, the temple embodies the ancient belief that Varanasi is the city personally protected by Shiva and never abandoned even during cosmic dissolution. The present structure was rebuilt in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore after earlier destructions and reconstructions across centuries. Its iconic golden spires and domes were later gilded through the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab. The temple's presiding deity, Vishweshwara or Vishwanath, is worshipped as the Lord of the Universe, attracting millions of devotees seeking blessings, spiritual merit, and ultimately Moksha. The temple forms the center of a sacred pilgrimage circuit that includes Annapurna Devi Temple, Kalabhairava Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, and countless shrines woven into the labyrinthine lanes of old Kashi. Daily rituals begin before dawn with Mangala Aarti and continue through a series of elaborate ceremonies until late night. The recently developed Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has transformed access between the temple and the Ganga, creating one of the largest temple revitalization projects in modern India. This series explores the Jyotirlinga's mythology, the legend of Shiva's eternal city, the spiritual significance of death and liberation in Kashi, centuries of history, architectural evolution, sacred ghats, festivals such as Mahashivaratri and Dev Deepawali, and the enduring role of Kashi as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
