Airavatesvara Temple: The Chola Palace of Art

Located in Darasuram near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, the Airavatesvara Temple is one of the finest achievements of medieval Indian architecture and a distinguished member of the UNESCO-recognized Great Living Chola Temples. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Rajaraja Chola II between 1146 and 1173 CE, this temple represents the artistic climax of the Chola civilization. During Maha Shivaratri, thousands of traditional lamps illuminate the granite surfaces, creating dramatic shadows that bring the sculptures to life. Monthly Pradosham celebrations continue the temple's historic association with music and performance traditions.
